Local Vs. Global Flood
The case for the local flood is argued so that the sons of Cain can survive. Why? the Kenites. This line of thinking pertains to the genetic inheritance of the future religious Jews in the time of the New Testament. It is thought they are decendants of Kenites - who are literally descendants of Satan. The Kenites are believed to be the sons of Cain, the first supposed Nephilim (angel-human hybrid), fathered by Satan. See previous articles in the serpent seed timeline that dispute the details in Genesis regarding this.
Historical Evidence
It has been written that those who do not accept the Bible as God's word insist the flood story was borrowed from surrounding cultures - yet evidence of it in surrounding cultures is what we expect to find if the flood happened. And various flood stories and legends do exist with native Americans, Aboriginees, and Eskimos. Memories of it are less distorted in cultures geographically and chronologically closer to the Middle East (since mankind now originates from Noah's family) than those far removed, like the flood legends of the native Americans and Aboriginees. Parallels are amazing, often including the part about sending out the birds, the sacrifice after the flood, sometimes the rainbow and how many people were saved - see the ancient Chinese pictogram:
What this means is that the story of the survival of this ONE family spread out as people spread out from where Noah landed - to far away lands. Bengt Sage's NOAH AND HUMAN ETYMOLOGY from IMPACT No. 83 May 1980, traces the name "Noah" through many cultures worldwide.
Scientific Evidence (from the perspective of Creation, not Evolution)
"I am a geomorphologist. Everywhere I look I see the flood. I study landforms.... I can show the shoreline at 13000 feet in Colorado and whole mountains in WY [Wyoming] that moved over 30 miles under the flood waters. I can show you islands of mammoth and rhino bones left in the artic by a tsunami that swept all of Alaska. That can only be The Flood."
- Joe Applegate, Heartofisrael.org's owner. One of the most compelling evidences for a global flood to me, personally, is the massive graveyard worldwide of dead bones circling the earth. Creatures who were killed and buried very quickly so as to preserve the evidence in fossil form. If their burial took nearly as long as evolutionists suggest, the bones would have decayed and disappeared. The ICR (Institute for Creation Research) can give more details on this - or see the Messianic Store in the science section for more information. Likewise there is the huge fossil record: billions of creatures killed by instant burial from the result of a great cataclysm. Geologists involved in the Creation Versus Evolution dispute have discovered much through "flood geology.'
The crux of the matter is this: there was no death until Adam sinned, thus the global flood that caused the fossil record is definitely a result of the flood of Noah that came after the creation of Adam and Eve - not before. (Genesis 2:17, 3:3, Romans 5:12,17). Even "Jesus Christ based His teaching of coming judgment on all mankind on the fact that Noah's Flood judged all mankind (Matthew 24:36-39, Luke 17:26, 27). A local flood implies a partial judgment." (DID NOAH'S FLOOD COVER THE WHOLE EARTH? - BTG No. 3b March 1989 by John D. Morris, Ph.D. - emphasis mine).
Scientists can explain how the enormous variety of species we see today can have derived from those taken on board the ark. Geneticist Francisco Ayala "calculates that the average human couple could have 102017 children before they would have to have one child identical to another! That number, a one followed by 2017 zeroes, is greater than the number of sand grains by the sea, the number of stars in the sky, or the atoms in the known universe (a "mere" 1080)!" CREATION, MUTATION, AND VARIATION,- IMPACT No. 89 November 1980 by Gary E. Parker, Ed. D. - see article for details on how in one generation two parents can have a huge range of children displaying differences in skin color alone - and hence why any talk of races being separate demonstrates a lack of scientific understanding. Science shows us how much greater God is that what we imagine is possible. The same enormous variation built into all creatures means diversification is possible - all different types of dogs, all different cats and so on.
The Biblical Evidence.
The flood is covered in its entirety in Genesis. References to the whole earth cannot be dismissed easily. For example:
- Genesis 6:17
And, behold, I, even I, do bring a flood of waters upon the earth, to destroy all flesh, wherein is the breath of life, from under heaven; and every thing that is in the earth shall die.- Genesis 7:6
And Noah was six hundred years old when the flood of waters was upon the earth.- Genesis 7:17
And the flood was forty days upon the earth; and the waters increased, and bare up the ark, and it was lift up above the earth.- Genesis 7:19-24
And the waters prevailed exceedingly upon the earth; and all the high hills, that were under the whole heaven, were covered. Fifteen cubits [about 20 feet] upward did the waters prevail; and the mountains were covered. And all flesh died that moved upon the earth, both of fowl, and of cattle, and of beast, and of every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth, and every man: All in whose nostrils was the breath of life, of all that was in the dry land, died. And every living substance was destroyed which was upon the face of the ground, both man, and cattle, and the creeping things, and the fowl of the heaven; and they were destroyed from the earth: and Noah only remained alive, and they that were with him in the ark. And the waters prevailed upon the earth an hundred and fifty days.Does it take 150 days for local floods to subside? Do local floods cover the hills by twenty feet - or cover the mountains? Do local floods kill every single creature that has breath of life - "even the fowl of heaven". Even the birds had nowhere to land and so they died too. If it was local, they could have flown to land and lived.
- Genesis 9:15
And I will remember my covenant, which is between me and you and every living creature of all flesh; and the waters shall no more become a flood to destroy all flesh.1 Peter 3:20
Which sometime were disobedient, when once the longsuffering of God waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was a preparing, wherein few, that is, eight souls were saved by water.2 Peter 3 draws a comparison - the scoffers who deny coming judgement are like those that denied the flood. What scoffers denied the flood? The scoffers in the days of Noah!
God's intention in the flood was to completely wipe out all mankind (except Noah and his family).
Genesis 6:17
And, behold, I, even I, do bring a flood of waters upon the earth, to destroy all flesh, wherein is the breath of life, from under heaven; and every thing that is in the earth shall die. Please Note: Aside from the above language implying all life, everything on the earth under heaven, God isn't leaving this genocide in the hands of man (such as when the Israelites were sent to wipe out the Canaanites). God Almighty Himself planned the destruction of the wicked and the salvation of Noah - specifically 8 souls (1 Peter 3:20). To even claim the sons of Cain survived as 'the Kenites' is to claim God's design to wipe clean all the wickedness from the earth was a terrible failure!
Aside from the obvious interpretation of a global flood any ten year old would come up with, the local flood idea must be another presupposition - a belief that is imposed on the text - as in Genesis 4:1 - rather than what the text clearly says.
The idea that it is precisely the Kenites in Canaan in Abraham's post-flood days are descended from Cain is simply because the word Kenite can mean son of Cain in the Strong's Concordance. Thus it is assumed to be a group derived from the original Cain, and that no other son was ever named Cain. However it is not a wholly unpopular name despite the original Cain's inheritance of sin from Adam... there is a Tubal-Cain and a Cainan under Seth's line for example.
(Evidence of a global flood in other passages like 2 Peter:3 is often explained away though what is called "gap theory." Gap theory is based on there being a gap in Genesis 1:1-2 where a former world preceeding Adam & Eve - was also destroyed by a flood. In this world, angels were created and some turned and followed the devil so a new world was forged to test the loyalty of remaining angels that are also the elect. Gap theory has been refuted elsewhere and also by I.C.R. Click here for details - including a look at Jeremiah's vision.)
